If you fail to study, pray and practice with wholeheartedness, respect and sincerity, you are most likely caught in a state of distraction, arrogance, restlessness, jealousy, discrimination or distress. If not resolved, these problems will prevent you from studying the Dharma, thinking and making choices in line with it, or accepting it in your heart. In effect, you are trapped in these obstacles.

Jealousy and arrogance are two widely-experienced problems. Jealousy comes from the tendency to put yourself in a lower position by feeling that others are better than you in some aspect. Others practice harder. They are more competitive, richer and have a better character, appearance, career or family. Believing all this, you feel miserable and suffer for it. This is called jealousy.

Arrogance is the tendency to look down upon others by feeling that they are not as good as you. Arrogant people tend to think that they have done more and are better, that they are more intelligent, physically stronger, better educated or somehow more capable. Such persons can hardly be peaceful or balanced in mind. They cannot look at themselves, other people or things in an ordinary mind, nor can they study the Buddha’s teachings in such a state of mind.

The ancient patriarchs and masters often observed, “An ordinary mind is the path.” That is to say, you need to know your own mind as it is. You need to see its status and problems clearly without being jealous or arrogant.

All external problems are projections of your inner problems. Some are problems you encounter now, but you cannot see them clearly because you lack wisdom and suffer from afflictive and cognitive obstructions. Some are long accumulated problems, flowing from the same causes in the past. These problems block and occupy your benevolent, pure and dignified mind.
