THE CLASSIC OF MOUNTAINS
AND RIVERS ·THE BLOOMING FLOWERS

Yan Jinsong

Thirty miles to the north was the Niushou Mountain. There is a kind of grass in there, called Ghost Grass, its leaves like sunflower and the stem is red, the flowers like the tassel of rice seedlings, eat them can make people carefree.

In the wild named Dahuang, there is a mountain called Nieyaoyundi. There is a tree named Fusang, three hundred miles high, its leaves shaped like a mustard leaf. There is a valley called Wenyuan Valley, also means Tanggu. There is a Fusang tree on the Tanggu, and ten suns come in and out of it. Only one comes back, another sun goes out, all load on the back of three-legged crow. —- THE CLASSIC OF MOUNTAINS AND RIVERS

I always want to make a picture album, which is full of flowers, perhaps for the love of the afterlife, perhaps for the love of the beautiful things, too. But it always reminds me of many works of Japanese photography, and also reminds me of Lin Daiyu's burying flowers scene in the Dream of Red Mansions: “Today you are laughed at for burying flowers. However, who will bury you when you die?" I am often fascinated by such fantasies. What exactly are the flowers? It’s so disturbing.

Last night I dreamed of a childhood playmate, and I heard that he was playing in the river in his hometown in the summer vacation, and he jumped into the water and never came up again. It is said that when a fellow villager downstream salvaged his body, his head cracked like a flower blooming… There is always that small figure floating and sinking in the river in my dream, as well as the flowers growing on his head, for a long time.

Since the ancient myths and legends of the pre-Qin period, the ancients have always had primitive plant worship and belief. There are many mysterious flowers and plants that can pass through the world of gods and the world of ghosts, and many exotic flowers and plants that can be eaten without worrying, hunger or even rejuvenation. In the smoky and dusty past, I imagine that the kings who worked tirelessly for immortality are also infatuated with flowers and plants in their hearts.

However, the flower is still my favorite thing. After all, it is related to the reproduction of life, and always full of fantasies and romance.

Besides, taking a camera to take photos of flowers, to take photos of a growing flower scene, is really a romantic thing, perhaps also has the meaning of exploration, because you do not know when and where a flower will be born. They are like ghosts popping up in front of a flash in the darkness. Maybe when you are surprised and forget to press the shutter, they will escape from the camera or your soul. So you have to be focused, hold your breath, or, like a sniper, but with romantic compassion. At this moment, with your eyes narrowed slightly, you can see the magical flowers blooming, stretching and rising from darkness, from ancient myths, from the distant wilderness… It goes straight to the three worlds’ boundaries.

However, the scene of you holding down the shutter makes me as if see Houyi. The magnificent scene was repeated, but it also interrupts the relationship between people, gods and the ghosts.

I was awakened from my dream by the blooming of flowers.

And everything in the past is annihilated in an instant…
